Inlays and Onlays

Regardless of how much care you give your teeth, problems can inevitably happen. There are people who are lucky enough to be born with perfect teeth that last a lifetime. However, for many others, the ravages of time, food, and even the care given to teeth can wear down their enamel coating, leading to all sorts of dangers, including cracking, chipping, and eventually interior decay.

An Overview of Inlays and Onlays

The specialists at Infinite Point Cook Dental have many advanced treatment options for any dental problems you may face. Inlays and onlays are two of our most common procedures, especially for patients with moderate damage to teeth. Fillings are used when a cavity is small, and complete crown replacements occur when decay has gone so far only a small part of the tooth can be saved.

Inlays and onlays are used when a patient’s problem lies in between those two extremes, where decay has gone too far for a simple filling to work, but there is enough healthy tooth left so that a complete crown replacement is unnecessary.

Benefits of Inlays and Onlays

There are multiple advantages to this type of procedure,

  • Highly Durable : To prevent patients having to repeat this procedure multiple times, extremely durable material is used which has the capability of lasting decades.
  • Improves Tooth Strength : Traditional metal fillings weakens the structure of the tooth, whilst inlays and onlays fortify the tooth due to the material used. This means the tooth will be significantly stronger and better protected from wear and tear.
  • Safeguarding Your Tooth : The procedure basically protects a vulnerable tooth from needing more invasive treatments in the future.

The Treatment Process

An inlay is a procedure where the replacement material is installed inside the tooth, fitting perfectly into your damaged area. An onlay lies over the top of the tooth, protecting any exposed areas and recreating any missing part of the tooth’s cap. When you visit Infinite Point Cook Dental with your initial problem, your dentist will determine which procedure will work for you, or if both are necessary.

It will just take two appointments for this procedure. One to prepare the site and create a mould and the second to apply the inlay or onlay.

  • Initial appointment : The dentist will start off by using a local anaesthetic to numb the procedure area to ensure you are comfortable when the surface is being prepared. Once the area is cleaned, an impression of your tooth is made with a mould. A temporary inlay/only is then applied until your next visit.
  • Final appointment : The area is once again used with a small dose of local anaesthetic, and the temporary inlay/onlay is removed and replaced with the permanent version. If you’re happy with the look and feel, the fixture is then set with cement.
